In the Garden… Time to Glamorize Cabbage

Cabbage may turn up a few noses but I wouldn’t be surprised if somewhere in history there was a cult that worshipped the big sphere. Cabbage is so versatile it can be used raw in coleslaw and my favorite use is chopped and used in place of lettuce in a salad. With the addition of avocado and tomato and any other favorite salad additions, it’s tasty and filling. And of course, there’s always stuffed cabbage. The leaves are so large they lend themselves nicely to stuffing. If you want a stuffed pasta dish but you’re on a diet, using cabbage leaves instead of pasta works well. Stuffed cabbage can also take on an Asian flair if filled with fried rice. An Italian dish could be made if you stuffed cabbage leaves with tomato puree, vegetables, tofu, onions, Italian spices and cheese on top, then baked. I’ve had chopped cabbage in many a Mexican restaurant, it mixes well with hot peppers. And then there’s the fermented food called sauerkraut, some people swear by if for their health. Whatever you dream up for your cabbage, you’ll take pleasure in knowing that eating cabbage is reputed to help prevent cancer. Killer Bees… an Experiment Gone Haywire?

Being that it’s summer and I’ve a variety of bees swarming around my flowering herbs, I decided to google “killer bees” to see what they looked like. To my surprise they looked similar to honeybees. There are quite a few websites, I looked at about four of them. Here’s what I garnered. One website said they believe killer bees got their start in Brazil after someone thought they could improve their bee genetics by importing queen bees from Africa. Unfortunately, the hybrid offspring tend to have an attitude and are easily offended. If killer bees feel threatened, they go get their buddies and come after you.  Their venom has more punch too. I live in Northern California and they’re not here, but the map shows them in Southern California as well as several other states. The fact that they’re hybrids is making it difficult to develop an extermination plan.

Weight Loss… Am I Missing Something?

I suspect my family suffers from the problem of being full but not feeling it. Unfortunately, that makes us want to keep eating. I suspect though that what my body is telling me is not to eat MORE but to get some activity going in my intestines. Foods like hot peppers stimulate digestion and good ‘ol old fashioned unfiltered organic apple juice will get something goin’ on. When we deprive our bodies of enzymes, found in fresh raw fruits and vegetables, we aren’t as happening as we should be. I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure one of the key to keeping pounds down is listening wisely to your body as it cries, “Give me something to do.” Suellen Ocean is the author of the vegetarian cookbook, Poor Jonny’s Cookbook. Sex Over Sixty? Ya Think?

Cover The Common Sense Guide to Good SexWho in the world ever drummed up the crazy notion that senior citizens aren’t sexy? My mother was in her eighties when she told me one of the volunteers at the hospital was being gossiped about because of her “promiscuity.” You mean they’re calling her a slut? She’s what… eighty something? Good grief, I didn’t really quite know how to respond. My mother had a coy smile on her face… making me wonder if she was bragging or complaining about her acquaintance’s escapades. Natural Gardening… Pretty Please

Butterflies and Bees? Yeah, I’ll go to bat for them. This year, I’ve noticed we have Bumble Bees but few Honeybees and almost no Butterflies. 50,000 Bumble Bees were poisoned in June in Oregon after an insecticide was sprayed on trees to control aphids, because of stickiness they cause to parked cars. The pesticide was “Safari” (dinotefuran) and belongs to a new group of chemicals called neonicotinoids, “implicated” in killing Honey Bees and possibly butterflies. I guess there are no warnings on the bottles or at the hardware store. Go natural and continue to enjoy the birds, the bees and the butterflies.
